I'm Janice and I sew clothes from vintage sewing patterns. I like: jiu jitsu, sewing, Bean (Esteemed Kitty Sewing Assistant), knitting, making iPhone apps & overcast days.
Great job on the collar, considering this was your first time =) What an awesome shirt to pair with a pencil skirt! Any favorite vintage, thrift, or consignment shops in NYC?
Thank you! In the end it will be a dress. This is just the progress so far.
As for thrift stores, I think thifting in NYC is very competitive and the stores vary in terms of a good deal vs. good quality. I do like Housing Works (you can google them for locations) and some Goodwill/Salvation army stores, but some of these tend to be overpriced.
This isn’t thifting but when I shopped more often I did like Daffy’s. You can buy good quality things that are cheap (in comparison to most retail), but it’s more about luck/being picky about what you find. Daffy’s gets castoffs from other brands/stores and sells them for a lot less, and it’s rare that you will find someone wearing the same thing as you (which can happen quite often with stores like Old Navy/H+M).
Hopefully you’ll finish the dress before summer ends so you can rock it while the weather’s still warm. Thanks for the shopping tips! I actually like Housing Works, my usual go-to on 23rd st on the east side. I’ll have to check out Daffy’s next time!
