FabUnits: the Vintage Fabric iPhone App

I’m an aspiring seamstress by night, but during the day I make iPhone apps. After sewing many vintage patterns, not too often I am presented with something like this:

convert

Vintage fabric bolt sizes come in many more widths than ours do today. I often found myself buying too much fabric. Based on the square area of fabric needed, I calculated how much fabric it would equate to using our modern day bolt size measurements.

I also added two extra screens that calculate total price based on price per yard, and convert meters to yard and yards to meter.

What it does:

screen1Convert fabric sizes.

screen3Convert meters to yards and yards to meters.

screen2Calculate total price based on price per yard.

Where to get it:

FabUnits is available here, for free.

  1. This is brilliant! What a great idea, I’ve always thought someone should make an app for this. Thanks for making it free, too!

  2. Hi! Thankyou so much for crating a fabulous app and sharing it!
just downloaded it and have a question and a wish…
The question: It seems like ou can only add whole yards when you convert the yardage and calculate the price of fabric? It’d be great to be able to add f.ex 1,2 instead of 1. In the metric/yard-converter it works fine! I will use that feature a lot, I’m all metric…
My wish is a metric converter from inches to metric (meters, or centimeters, or even to millimeters, any of them would work) so that us metric people can check in the yardage-table on the pattern envelope to see which fabric width is the closest to the one we’d like to buy, and check how wide the modern fabric is in inches. It’s all in inches there, and I’m totally lost.
I love the design of it, btw, very modern retro!

  3. Karin, for now it’s whole numbers but I’ll definitely be keeping what you said in mind and I’ll revise the functionality you requested. I’ll let you know when I update the app. :)
