I’m a little late on the Sorbetto bandwagon, but here it is anyway.
I first attempted Sorbetto over a year ago which led to a tremendous fail. It didn’t fit, it looked really short and it was weirdly-shaped. I gave it a second try and surprisingly I like it. I drafted a scallop collar which I think (?) makes it look more vintage but it’s hard to say here considering I didn’t set my hair.
Fabric used: Geometric blue cotton voile, remnants (about a yard?). Swiss dot for the collar, less than a yard, also remnants.
Construction notes: Used French seams. Serged the sleeves and hem before folding it over and tacking it down.
What I did differently this time:
- checked the printed pattern swatch to make sure it was 4×4 (this was crucial)
- cut a standard size 2 everywhere but cut a size 4 in the armholes
- drafted some cap sleeves
- added 4 inches to the hem
- drafted a scalloped collar which might possibly make me look like a deranged clown, but I like it and I don’t care
I have many more Sorbettos planned out (especially for those remnants that I love to hoard) but hopefully each will look different each time. This is definitely a very versatile pattern.
Nice! I love the collar paired with that print. I do think it looks more vintage, but not costume-y (I mean that in a good way!).
Also, are those your Clovers? Girl, those look gooood.
Thank you! Sometimes with vintage it can possibly look costume-y.
Yes those are my Clovers. I need to make another pair or two since I wear the blue ones all the time.
This is just great, I have recently downloaded this pattern but this is now high on my list to do. Love the addition of the collar. So glad I follow your blog it really inspires me.
Thank you, Yvette! It took me a few tries to get it right. I did do a muslin the second time around just in case because the first version was horribly too small for me. I’m making a second version that will be ready hopefully soonish.
Oh this is just darling — versatile but vintage-y. It’s great to have patterns that use up small pieces AND are so versatile. You added sleeves! Looking forward to your future sorbettos.
Thanks Ali. Considering summer (or even spring) where I live is only for a good 3 months at the most, I definitely need something with sleeves. I need to photograph this again with more vintage styling. It’s something that I think *should* feel vintage but for some reason looks very modern to me in these pictures.
This is so adorable! I think I might copy your collar idea!
Sure! Does anyone want a tutorial on this btw? I can post one, I just need to take some pictures with it.
super cute! I really love this fabric you chose! goes great with your blue Clovers!
Thank you! I need to photograph it again to see if it looks vintage-y enough.
This is so cute, Janice! I LOVE the print, and the collar looks great! Awesome job!
Thank you! It really does look cute.

I love my 50mm lens – it’s hardly been off my camera since I bought it! And I really must try out the Sorbetto top, to be honest I thought it was a bit plain and boring but after seeing how fantastic your versions have turned out I realise it’s just my lack of vision….
The only thing with my 50mm is my house is so small that I need to step waaaay back to take outfit pictures with it. Is that the standard lens that you use when you take your outfit pictures?
It is plain and boring but I think that’s the beauty of it. It’s easily adaptable to whichever version you want it to be.
Janice, I love the fact that you have added sleves. A good idea for those of us a little older than you
. How did you draft the sleeves? I would love a tutorial on that if you feel like it and have the time….
Thanks Lene! I ended up putting sleeves on all my Sorbettos since for me it’s more practical to have sleeves on them than without.
I used some sleeves that Mena had on her Sew Weekly Sorbetto project. The post for the sleeves is here: http://www.sewweekly.com/2011/08/revised-sorbetto-sleeve/
On my Rebel the 50mm is actually more like an 80ish mm. Do you use your 50mm on all of your indoor photos?
